Producer


Toni Novella is a graduate in Media & Communication Science – specialising in Image and Sound, from Madrid’s Universidad Complutense. During his time as a student he began his career in film production as apprentice production manager on films such as Bazar Viena (1989) by Amalio Cuevas. On finishing his studies he worked as production assistant on Pedro Almodóvar’s High Heels (1991) and Eduardo Campoy’s Demasiado Corazón (1991).

From 1992 he worked as production assistant on a long list of films including Acción Mutante (“Mutant Action”, 1992) by Alex de la Iglesia, Luis García Berlanga’s Todos a la Cárcel (“Everyone Off to Jail”, 1993), Kika (1993) by Pedro Almodóvar, Arruinados and Sálvate si Puedes (1994) by Joaquín Trincado, Almodóvar’s The Flower of My Secret (1995) Live Flesh (1997) and All About My Mother (1998), Cha, Cha, Cha (1997) by Antonio del Real and Manuel Gómez Pereira’s Entre las Piernas (“Between Your Legs”, 1998).

His first film as Production Manager was Ray Loriga’s La Pistola de Mi Hermano (“My Brother’s Gun”, 1997), followed by One of the Hollywood Ten (2000) by Karl Francis, Guillermo del Toro’s The Devil’s Backbone (2000), Intacto (2000) by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo and Almodóvar’s Talk to Her (2002).

From 2002, Toni Novella has been Line Producer of films such as Descongélate (“Chill Out”) by Félix Sabroso and Dunia Ayaso and Almodóvar’s Volver (2005), for which he received his first nomination for a Goya award. These were followed by The Bourne Ultimatum by Paul Greengrass (2007), on which he was the production manager: second unit, Madrid, Steven Soderbergh’s Che (2007), Almodóvar’s Broken Embraces (2008) and Andrucha Waddington’s Lope (2009), for which he received his second Goya award nomination. Pedro Almodóvar’s 2010 film The Skin I Live In saw him once again nominated for a Goya Award for Best Production Direction. Next came Red Lights by Rodrigo Cortés (2011), Almodóvar’s I’m So Excited in 2012 and Turning Tide by Christophe Offenstein (2012).

In 2013 Toni Novella worked on Ridley Scott’s blockbuster Exodus as the Production Manager in Almería.

For his work on Fernando González Molina’s Palm Trees in the Snow (2014), he was again nominated for a Goya Award. In 2015 he won his first Goya and Premio Gaudí awards for Best Production Direction for El Niño by Daniel Monzón. Also in 2015 Toni was Line Producer on Almodóvar’s Julieta, while in 2016 he was also Line Producer on Lennart Ruff, Titan, as well as on Fernando González Molina’s The Invisible Guardian.

In 2017, he signed as Line Producer for Sara’s Notebook by Norberto López Amado and Yucatán (2017) by Daniel Monzón. In 2019 he does so for El viaje de Marta (Staff only) by Neus Ballús and Pedro Almodóvar’s Pain and Glory for which he obtains the Audiovisual Valenciano Award to the Best Production Direction and appears, once again, among the nominees to the Goya Award to the Best Production Direction.

In 2020 he appears as Line Producer of ‘Nieva en Benidorm‘ by Isabel Coixet, film for which, another more time, Toni is nominated in Goya Awards for Best Production Direction, and also as Delegate Producer of Malasaña 32 by Alberto Pintó and El verano que vivimos by Carlos Sedes. In 2022 he produced and worked as Line Producer in Live is life. La gran aventura, by Dani de la Torre.

In 2023 the animated film ‘Mummies‘ is released worldwide, of which Toni is a producer. In 2024 arrives in cinemas “Buffalo Kids”, which he also produces.

As well as his prolific career in cinema, Toni has also directed production on a number of television mini-series and advertisements.

He gives classes on Production at a number of universities and film schools.
